Picturesque tour through the Oberland in the canton of

Berne, in Switzerland. Illustrated by seventeen coloured

engravings and a map showing the principal mountains

and glaciers. London, Published at R. Ackermann’s Re-

pository of Arts, 101 Strand (printed by: William Clowes),

1823, in-4to, VIII + 120 p. + 17 plates with views all

hand-coloured + 1 map, some stains on the free endpa-

pers only, book contents and plates exceptionally clean,

some dust stains mainly in the margins, light occasional

foxing, bound in original light brown clothbound, covers

blindpressed, spine with title and ornaments gilt, top of

spine recently restored. HRB 93348 5500.-

Weibel). Perret mentionne sous

‘Lory (N° 2696) ‘Souvenirs de

la Suisse...pour faire suite au

Voyage Pittoresque dans l’Oberland Bernois’ sans pour autant

mentionner ‘le Voyage Pittoresque’ lui-même de 1822, et il

confond, selon moi, 2 différentes éditions.

First English edition in a beautiful publisher’s binding. Seventeen

hand coloured aquatint views without signatures. The work is

considered to be an English version of the work by Phil. Alb.

Stapfer «Voyage pittoresque de l’Oberland ou Description ...»

published in Paris, in- folio,1812, with 1 frontispice by Duncker

and 14 coloured plates after G. Lory by S. Weibel. which was

also published in 1822 in Paris and Strasbourg. In this edition 11

views are by J.S. Weibel & 6 by F. Schmid, F. Schutz, M. Wocher

& G. Lory. But ‘Some of the plates in Ackermann”s book, judg-

ing by the titles, do not correspond with any in the Voyage Pit-

toresque, however’ (Abbey Travel). These ne ‘ bright’ coloured

94. MARCARD, Heinrich Matthias (1747-1817): Über

die Natur und den Gebrauch der Bäder. Hannover, Hahn-

sche Buchhandlung, 1793, in-8vo, XVIII + 456 S. + 2 Bl.,

Wurmstich im Steg der ersten 24 S. (kein Textverlust),

Orig. Halbledereinb. mit Ecken, Ecken etwas bestossen,

Rotschnitt, schönes Exemplar. HRB 73695 1500.-

Erstausgabe dieses Standardwerkes des damals ‘Herzoglich

Hollstein-Oldenburgischen Leibmedicus zu Oldenburg’. Mar-

card leitete ab 1809 bis zu seinem Tod als Direktor das berühmte

Pyrmonter Bad in Norddeutschland und war der bedeutendste

Badearzt des 18. Jh. (Martin, Badewesen S. 279). Nach der

Beschäftigung mit den englischen Bädern gibt er hier als erster

die noch heute gebräuchlichen Vorschriften für Kaltbäder.

Zuvor hatte er 1778 schon den Schwitzkasten als englische

Neuerung eingeführt, war er doch ebenfalls Königl. Grossbrit.

95. (MASSON, marquis de PEZAY, Alexandre-Frédé-

rique-Jacques): Les soirées Helvetiennes, Alsaciennes, et

Fran-Comtoises. Amsterdam, se trouve à Paris, Delalain,

1771, in-8°, (17x11 cm), 1 ff. + 419 p. + 1 p. d’errata, ça

et là pet. taches ou lég. bruni, trace d’ex-libris, inscription

sur titre ‘Par Le Mquis de Pezay’, reliure en veau marbré

à nerfs du XVIIIe , reliure usée. HRB 34721 450.-

Première édition. Peu courante. Un des tout premiers récits

de voyage en Suisse en style ‘ampoulé’. Une histoire critique

culturelle de l’Alsace, du Jura et de la Suisse, comportant e.a.

une visite à Bâle et à sa fameuse bibliothèque, des réexions sur

les anabaptistes, les grottes, des pensées agréables sur les dames

(suisses et autres) et leurs différentes façons de s’habiller, etc.

Erste Ausgabe. Im köstlichem polemischem Stil geschrieben.

Der Autor, auch Verfasser mehrere tändlerische Gedichte (Zélis

au bain, nll. éd. 1882) zeigt sich sehr interessiert an der Weib-

lichkeit in den verschiedenen Gegenden, die er besucht. Auch die

Wiedertäufer bekommen mehrere wohlwollende Notizen. Haller

war offensichtlich verärgert denn er beanstandet die üble Laune

des Autors: “Alles ist mit übler Laune geschrieben; besonders

redet er von Basel. Bey den Eisgebirgen will er gesehen haben,

dass die hinunter stürzenden Eisklumpen im Anstosse Feuer

96. MATTHEY, André: Les bains de Saint-Gervais

(St.-Gervais), près du Mont-Blanc (en Savoie). Paris et

Genève, J.J. Paschoud, 1818, in-8vo, XIV + 1 ff. (table

des mat.) + 240 p. avec 1 planche dépliante gravée (vue

de l’établissement thermal), reliure en demi-cuir du temps,

avec ls dorés sur le dos et le titre: ‘Mémoires’, tranches

jaunes, bon état. HRB 7607 1200.-

L’auteur était médecin à Genève et après une première partie

topographique sur l’itinéraire de Genève, les sites, l’histoire

naturelle, l’eau, l’air et le régime des bains, fait suivre une

seconde partie sur les propriétés médicinales des eaux avec

toutes les maladies traitables. Cet ouvrage est relié avec: 1)
