in public! (At least one copy

survived). Fine large paper

copy, with 19 letters by Favre

and 1 by Norbert. The author

P.F. Favre, a Swiss priest,

heavily criticised the prac-

tices of Jesuit missionaries

established there, especially

their tolerance of certain pa-

gan rites practiced by the

Christians. As a result, his

book was added to the index, and publicly burned in Fribourg

(Switzerland) in April, 1746.

Edition originale de cet ouvrage qui, peu après sa publication

en 1746, fut interdit par l’évêque de Lausanne et brûlé sur la

Place de l’Hôtel de ville de Fribourg, par ordre du gouvernement

fribourgeois. (Au moins un exemplaire fut sauvé!). Au delà des

querelles religieuses, l’ouvrage donne une bonne description

de l’Indochine, de ses moeurs, de ses habitants et de l’état des

missions religieuses. En 1737, le prêtre Suisse-Romand Pierre-

François Favre fut désigné par le Saint-Siège pour accompa-

gner Mgr de la Baume dans la visite apostolique des missions

de l’Annam, de la Cochinchine et du Cambodge. Il déploie

dans ces régions une activité dévorante pendant quatre années

(1738-1742). Mgr de la Baume étant mort sur place, l’abbé

Favre lui succéda comme proviseur; il s’attira l’inimitié des

Jésuites qu’il accusait de tolérer la pratique des rites religieux

païens par les chrétiens indigènes. Ouvrage mis à l’index et

brûlé publiquement aussitôt sorti de presse. DHBS III/67
